Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V.

Political and socially committed photography – that is the trademark of the Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V. The Freundeskreis was founded in 1996 to inaugurate the Willy-Brandt-Haus. The Willy-Brandt-Haus has been the headquarters of the SPD (Social Democratic Party) in Germany since then.

From the very beginning, international artists shaped the new location, which regardless of its political importance has developed into a renowned exhibition location in Berlin. In over 20 years, the Freundeskreis has organized more than 300 exhibitions and cultural events and presented them in the Willy-Brandt-Haus. These included well-known names such as Jewgeni Chaldej, Robert Lebeck, Sylvia Plachy, Gisèle Freund and Vivian Maier.

Since 2002, the Freundeskreis has presented the winners of the World Press Photo Award, the world’s largest and most prestigious press photography competition. The Freundeskreis also organizes readings and evening film screenings at regular intervals at the interface between art and politics.

The Freundeskreis Willy-Brandt-Haus e.V. has also been commissioned to set up and maintain its own art collection in the Willy-Brandt-Haus. The works of art from the collection are exhibited at regular intervals and complement the programme of the association.
